Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 40

Time to make myself comfortable on the toilet for the next few hours.

Kinja'd!!!

I have to get thru 1/2 of this in the next few hours, which should be VERY tasty. Then the rest at 4am. All this for what many men of a certain age have done on a fairly regular basis. This is my fourth go around since my early 40’s. Thank God the ACA still requires these to be covered. Until the Supreme Court decides otherwise. Wish me luck. Gonna be a fun night.

Butt camera time? I had one of those when I turned 50. I’m in the 10-year club, though. Also got scoped from the other end to have a look at my hiatal hernia. I didn’t find the cleansing all that bad, except that I took all the laxatives and then went to a soccer game. Almost made it home in time.....

If you can stomach it there is one concoction that is only a few oz to drink rather than the whole gallon. It’s appropriately concentrated though and while it’s been 20 years I think I still gag thinking about it!

As someone who is slowly getting up there in years, I thought they could mostly test for prostate cancer with a blood test?  At least that’s what they told me when I had my last physical (a few years ago).  Maybe Canada has a different standard when it comes to tests?

Do you have a mobile backup battery? Keep it handy.

Also find a show you haven’t caught up with and just plan on watching it a lot. Or keep a book you’ve wanted to get through near by.

This is a colon cancer thing, not prostate. I think. Prostate is the PSA test or the finger-up-the-butt test.

Crohn's buddy! How you doing? I've only had the one at diagnosis, along with the camera down the throat, too. That meant I was sedated for it: yay! I also had to do the cleanse for an MRI, because they wanted to get an image on the area between where the cameras reached.

There is a colon cancer screening test called Cologuard. You send in a canister of your poop, and they look for hyper plastic cells in it. If it comes back positive, you still have to get the colonoscopy, but it’s a pretty good screening with high 90s effectiveness.

But you’re right, he’s talking about the prostate specific antigen test, and that's a different thing entirely.

You started early. Most without a predisposing family history are recommended to start at 50.

Good luck, friend. I don’t envy you, but I will be you sometime this Fall.

I gotta be honest: as someone turning 50 in the near future, I’m not sure I want to go through all this. Let me find out when it’s too late to spend months going through invasive treatments, but not too late to take a trip around the country in my Jeep.

Thread that needle carefully.

I’m 28, but even now stuff happens and it’s like “huh, never had that occur before”.

I am positive that 20 more years is really not gonna help matters.

I had a friend from work who died at 55 because he never got tested and ignored the signs. He g ave it a good fight , and did the treatments for a  year or so , but finally told his wife that was to o tired to continue the treatments. He passed within a few weeks.

Cologuard may not be right for you if:

You have a personal history of colon cancer, adenomas, or other related cancers

You have a family history of colon cancer (one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer before the age of 60, or two or more first degree relatives diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer of any age)

You have had a positive result from another screening method in the last six months

You have been diagnosed with a condition that places you at high risk for colon cancer. These include but are not limited to: inflammatory bowel disease, chronic ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, familial adenomatous polyposis

You have been diagnosed with a relevant cancer syndrome passed on from your family, such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, MYH-associated polyposis, Gardner’s syndrome, Turcot’s (or Crail’s) syndrome, Cowden’s syndrome, juvenile polyposis, Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, neurofibromatosis, or familial hyperplastic polyposis

In my early 30's I had symptoms the lead the doctor’s believe I may have Crohn ’s or possibly cancer. I had the camera through both ends, and nothing more than polyp s in my throat was found, and Barr ett’s esopha gus. No explanations for what was causing the C rohn’s related issues I that I was experiencing. I was told that I need an endoscopy every 2 years. I did an endoscopy two years later, and have not done since , so 20 years have passed  since my last one.

Yep, absolutely. If you’re at risk, statistically, move right to the colonoscopy line.

From what I understand I got lucky in that most people diagnosed my age (mid thirties at diagnosis) typically figure it out when they're admitted to a hospital for uncontrollable bloody diarrhea. I was much more mild, thankfully. Oddly, my daughter has celiac and we had our endoscopes the same week.

When I first experienced symptoms, I thought I had food poisoning, but it just wouldn’t stop. I went home from work, sometimes right after walking in the door. There were days where the trips to the toilet numbered in the teens. Never came to a conclusion of what was causing this after 6 plus months of tests. I hope your daughter is doing well now, p robably on a gluten free diet.
